University of Alabama at Birmingham Financial Aid
Financial aid is awarded on an annual basis. Students who wish to apply for federal financial aid must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) each year. The application can be found at www.fafsa.gov.
Apply for Financial Aid
You might think your need isn’t large enough for financial assistance, but you might be surprised. Completing the following three steps – sooner rather than later – will ensure that you are considered for the appropriate aid available to you.
- The only way to know for sure if you qualify for financial assistance is to complete the FAFSA – the Free Application for Federal Student Aid.

- Submitting the Title IV Authorization Form allows UAB to use your federal aid to pay for non-mandatory charges up front. The Financial Aid office highly recommends that you submit this form to avoid paying fees out-of-pocket.
- Complete the Resource Form if you are receiving any financial assistance in the form of scholarships, VA benefits, tuition assistance, etc.
Changes to the FAFSA Process for 2017-2018
- Submit a FAFSA earlier:
Students will be able to submit a 2017–18 FAFSA as early as Oct. 1, 2016, rather than beginning on Jan. 1, 2017. The earlier submission date will be a permanent change, enabling students to complete and submit their FAFSAs as early as October 1 every year. (There is NO CHANGE to the 2016–17 schedule. The 2016–17 FAFSA became available Jan. 1, 2016.)
- User earlier income and tax information:
Beginning with the 2017–18 FAFSA, students will be required to report income and tax information from an earlier tax year. For example, on the 2017–18 FAFSA, students (and parents, as appropriate) will report their 2015 income and tax information, rather than their 2016 income and tax information.
