Combined Internal Medicine – Pediatrics Program:
As graduates of the program ourselves, we believe that UAB has many advantages and opportunities for residents. A few components of the program that set us apart are highlighted below:
Balance—one of the most important aspects of a Med-Peds program. Strong pediatric and medicine categorical programs form the basis of our program. This strength is demonstrated by their continued national recognition as leading training programs and research departments. The Departments of Medicine and Pediatrics rank in the top 15 nationally in NIH funding, 13th and 20th (respectively) according to U. S. News and World Reports for categorical training programs.
Commitment to Education—characterizes both departments. Research and education are of equal value in promoting faculty which encourages development of true “clinician-educators.” The categorical and med-peds programs have a strong financial commitment by the departments providing for all the educational needs of our residents—supporting trips to conferences, providing PDAs, board study materials and much more.
Flexibility—In addition to providing the foundation needed for a successful future, residents have many opportunities to explore career options in subspecialties, overseas mission work, research and primary care. The program can be tailored to meet your career goals and needs.
Diversity—Three very different hospitals for medicine offer a wide variety of patients and care settings. A large free-standing children’s hospital provides nearly all the subspecialty and tertiary care for the state and beyond. All of these hospitals are located within blocks of one another.
Our Residents—Over the past years we have been fortunate to attract outstanding house-officers. During residency one’s peers are frequently the most influential people encountered. Our residents are also among our best educators.

|The Med-Peds Residency Training Programs only accept applications via the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). For more information about ERAS, please contact your medical school dean’s office. International medical graduates must register for ERAS by contacting the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG).
Applicants for the PGY-1 level are selected through the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP). The NRMP number for UAB’s Combined Med-Peds Residency Program is 1007700C0.
We do not have a specific Med-Peds rotation for visiting students. Students are encouraged to choose from the following rotations (if they are available):
These services are busy and can provide a realistic view of residency at UAB. Visiting students are also encouraged to attend some of the Medicine, Pediatrics, and Med-Peds noon conferences.
