UAH Advising

UAH Advising

Academic advising is your primary resource for advice, information, and guidance regarding your academic career. Your academic advisor can assist you with registration, course selection, and academic planning; answer questions about financial aid, study-abroad programs, and experiential learning opportunities; and help you find your way around campus.

WHY IS ACADEMIC ADVISING IMPORTANT?

Academic advising is not simply a process where an advisor hands students a schedule of courses and contacts students if their GPA is falling.  Advisors are a student’s first contact with the College of Engineering and they are charged with advocating for engineering students.  Engineering advisors serve as mentors, who help guide students through academic policy and procedure, offer advise and listen, and refer students to campus support services as needed.

Advisors can give you information about the different engineering majors to help students decided which engineering major is the best fit.  Advisors help students with the transition to college academic programs, develop plans of study in their chosen field, and track student academic progress and performance.  Advisors can give you information on academic and student support services and experiential learning options.  Advisors are also here to listen and give students support when college gets tough.

The Engineering Academic advisors have developed two documents to assist students with the academic advising and career guidance process and a summary of important academic policies that are most likely to affect engineering students.  Also, the new Academic Progress Policy for Engineering students is lined below. Review these documents and contact an advisor if you need assistance or direction.

HOW DO I MAKE AN APPOINTMENT TO SEE AN ADVISOR?

Engineering students can make appointment to see an academic advisor using the “book-now” link below. Students can see an advisor to determine their semester classes, discuss academic performance and support services, and to discuss career planning.

For some students, academic advising is mandatory in order to register.  This includes new students, students who are not making good academic progress and students preparing for graduation.  For other students, academic advising is optional, but recommended at least once per calendar year.   Students are informed by email (at their official UAH account) if advising is mandatory and how to use the “book-now” tool to make advising appointments.  CUE2 uses this flowchart to determine which students must be seen by an advisor.

Academic Advisors

All students are encouraged to meet early and often with an advisor in their chosen area of study. (Students who are undeclared are considered Exploratory until a major is chosen.)
