About remote access

VPN

  • Use the Virtual Private Network (VPN) for secure, authenticated access to personal (H:) drives, and to web-based resources off campus or over the University’s wireless network.
  • VPN is a browser-based, remote access solution for personal devices (Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, Windows Mobile, Android).
  • All you need is an internet connection – open a web browser and login to the VPN with your usual University username and password. The first time you login, you will need to install the VPN components – follow our installation video or written guides to get started.

VDI

  • Use the Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) to access electronic resources and applications on a personal device (Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, Android).
  • You can access the VDI in two ways: by installing the VMWare Horizon client on your computer or mobile device, and via your web browser.
  • The number of users who can log into VDI at any one time limited. The VDI will prompt you if there are no virtual desktops available; you can try connecting again later

Direct Access (Staff Only)

  • Direct Access seamlessly connects your University owned and managed Windows laptop to the University network whenever you are off campus and have an internet connection.
  • It is a secure, always-on connection to the University network and resources.

Remote VPN

Remote VPN is a browser-based, remote access solution for personal devices (Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, Windows Mobile, Android).

Remote VPN provides you with secure, authenticated, access to your personal filespace (H: drive) off campus or over the University wireless network.

Where appropriate, some users may also be able to access shared network drives – contact the Service Desk for details.

All you need is an internet connection – open a web browser and login to the VPN with your usual University username and password.

The first time you login, you will need to install the VPN components – follow the onscreen instructions or read our Remote VPN user guidelines (click the Downloads button in Learners’ Toolkit).

VDI (Virtual Desktop Infrastructure)

Use the VDI to access electronic resources (e.g. electronic journals and library catalogues) and software including MS Office when working off campus on your personal device (Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, Android).

You can access the VDI in two ways: via your web browser; by installing the VMWare Horizon client on your computer.

Email

The email and calendaring service for registered undergraduate and taught postgraduate students is Outlook Web App (OWA), hosted by Microsoft Office 365.

You can access your University email both on and off campus – all you need is a web browser and an internet connection.

Access library resources

Most e-resources such as e-journals and e-books can be accessed using the Library’s resource discovery tool, Primo. These resources will typically prompt you to log in using Shibboleth.

SSH gateway

  • Secure, authenticated remote access solution for any device
  • Access via ssh client
  • Access to linuxserv, HPC (Maxwell) and other ssh servers
  • Service hours: 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year

SCP

  • Secure, authenticated remote access solution for any device
  • Access via SCP client (e.g. WinSCP)
  • Access to your H drive
